Principles of Soxhlet Extraction Thimbles
Soxhlet extraction thimble exploits principles of solvent refluxing and siphoning, making solid substance continuously been extracted by the pure solvent. When boiling steam rises through the side pipe, it can congeal into liquid and infiltrate the solid substance inside the thimble. Once the solvent level in the thimble surpasses the highest level of the siphon, the solvent will flow into the flask. After repeating refluxing and siphoning, the solid substance will gather in the flask.
Operation of Soxhlet Extraction Thimbles
Use thick filter paper to make a tube. Add the sample inside and use the rope to fasten it. Then put the tube into the thimble and connect the flask and condenser pipe. Adjust to an appropriate flow rate of condenser water, heat to make reflux and siphon. Continue to distill and after repeated cycles, the active substances will mainly be kept in the flask. When finish extraction, pour out the solvent and maintain concentration under reduced pressure.
