The Development History of the QuEChERS Method

The QuEChERS method was developed by an American scientist called Michelangelo Anastasiades in the years 2001 and 2002. QuEChERS is an abbreviation of seven separate words: Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe, this is what the new method in sample preparation stands for.
Michelangelo Anastassiades developed the methodology for analyzing the veterinary drugs initially, then tested it on pesticide residue analysis in plant material for its great potential with great success. In 2003, he published the detailed method in the journal AOAC international which made a great effect.
In the following years, the published method was improved to enlarge both pesticide and production scope. The buffering salts were introduced into the processing to improve recoveries of pH-depending analytes. The official method AOAC 2007 have introduced acetate buffering to have a pH value of 6 for all samples. Afterward, the scientist improved QuEChERS buffers to citrate salts and elaborated conditions even further.
In 2008, the European Standard–EN 15662 (Foods of Plant Origin – Determination of Pesticide Residues Using GC-MS and/or LC-MS/MS Following Acetonitrile Extraction/Partitioning and Clean-up by Dispersive SPE (QuEChERS method)) was published.
Nowadays, the scope of analytical applicability of QuEChERS method has expanded into natural contaminants, veterinary drugs, mycotoxins and other fields. It has become a mainstream approach of sample preparation in pesticide residue analysis world.
