The syringe filter is mainly used for the filtration of solvent samples, which holds a crucial position in the sample prefiltration procedure, especially in the HPLC sample analysis. There are two basic aspects of the syringe filter that should be learned and memorized clearly.
Composition
The syringe filter consists of two main parts, including the housing part and filter membrane.
Usually, the housing material is pp, or nylon, which is stable in performance and resistant to most solvents. As for the membrane, several different kinds of materials are suitable for different solutions and solvents with specific features.
The most commonly used membrane materials are PTFE, PES, Nylon, and PVDF. The filtration of both aqueous organic solutions could be satisfied with high efficiency. Except for the two main parts, the standard Luer lock structure adopted highly ensures the tight connection of the syringe.
Notification
The first important precaution is to not use the syringe with a volume smaller than 1 cc, which may cause filter membrane damage or personal injury with excessively high pressure. Secondly, it would be better to discard the initial filtrate or to wash the filter with 1-2ml solution sample in advance. In this way, the filtration result will meet the customers’ demand better.
